Twelve months, countless posts and more lessons than I can count. My first year at Mercury was a masterclass in making noise and making it matter. I walked into this role with curiosity and eagerness to learn about the world of social media and public relations. This journey has shaped my understanding of the intricacies behind crafting brand narratives, building meaningful relationships and navigating the digital landscape. I want to share the most valuable lessons I’ve learned and how they have helped me grow as a professional and as a storyteller.
One of the first things I learned at Mercury was the importance of flexibility. Social media, in particular, is a moving target—what works today might not be relevant tomorrow. A shift in platform algorithms, changing audience behaviors or a new viral trend sometimes necessitates changing strategies.
I’ve learned that storytelling is more than just a marketing tool in the public relations industry, it’s an art. The most successful campaigns I’ve worked on at Mercury were those where the story we told wasn’t just about the products or service. It was made more personal by focusing on the people behind the brand, the journey they’ve taken or the impact they are striving to make.
I’ve come to appreciate the importance of trusting the process. It takes time to build a brand’s voice, find the right audience and refine your strategies. In this ever-shifting landscape, it’s essential to allow room for experimentation. Whether it’s testing a new format, exploring a new social media platform or tweaking messaging, taking calculated risks can lead to unexpected and rewarding results. There’s an exotic beauty in the unknown, where sometimes the best ideas come from those moments when you’re willing to step outside the box and try something new.
Most importantly, I’ve learned that no achievement in social media or public relations happens in isolation. Behind every successful campaign, there is a team of passionate, creative and driven individuals working in tandem. Every person plays a vital role in turning a vision into reality and in this industry, we rise by lifting each other up.
As I move into my second year at Mercury, I’m excited to continue building on the lessons I’ve learned. The world of social media marketing and PR will keep evolving, and with that comes an opportunity for growth, reinvention and more possibilities. I’ve only scratched the surface, but I’m grateful for the experiences that have shaped me thus far. To anyone just starting out in this field, or anyone who’s already on this journey, don’t forget to stay curious, stay adaptable and above all, stay true to your story. The path ahead is wide open, and the best is yet to come.
